The evolution of a family business

Bess Licher started Licher Direct Mail, Inc. in 1946—in her garage. In 1953, she recruited her husband, Wayne Licher, Sr., to handle graphic design.

Bess was committed to technology from the start, and purchased two Addressograph machines as well as a Multi 1250 printing press. The Multi was the second press of its kind in use in Pasadena. She soon added a folder and a cutter, and the couple started hiring employees.

Additions in 1985 and 2000 created an additional 12,000 square feet of production space.

Wayne Licher, Jr. and Jim Jarvis joined the company in the mid-1970s. Both learned the intricacies of graphics, printing, mailing, and customer service, and were running the company by the time Wayne and Bess Licher retired in 1990.

In 2002, Licher invested in a 6-color Komori press, more computers, new software, and employee training. Customers raved about the better print quality and faster turnaround through direct-to-plate technology. While the corporate name didn't change, the company became known as Licher Printing & Mailing.

Today, Licher combines cutting-edge technology with unbeatable personal service and meticulous attention to detail. The staff even includes two of Bess Licher's grandchildren.
